How to apply for a new passport: 

Client makes sure to meet the following qualifications: 

  • Person who is applying for their first U.S. passport  

  • Above the age of 16 years old 

  • To find location, hours, and phone number for available post offices and libraries that offer new passport applications, go to: https://iafdb.travel.state.gov/ and type 96819 zip code. 

  • Best way to schedule an appointment is to call one of the available sites to see if there are any slots open for applying for a new passport. 

  • The closest sites around Kalihi that offer new passports are Aiea Post Office, Aiea Public Library, and Hawaii State Library 

  • Most of the time, slots will be filled quickly and an available spot may be around next month or so. 

  • After scheduling an appointment, make sure to gather the following documents: 

  • Completed application form DS-11 

  • Proof of U.S. citizenship 

  • Birth certificate, Certificate of Naturalization, Certificate of Citizenship 

  • Photocopy of U.S. citizenship 

  • Go to the Department of Health (DOH) and pay a small fee for a Vital Records copy 

  • Valid picture ID 

  • Photocopy of ID 

  • Two passport photos 

  • Go to Walgreens, Walmart, or any local post office that offer passport photos 

  • Two separate checks or money orders 

  • Passport fee: $130 (Checks made payable to the U.S. Department of State) 

  • Execution fee: $35 (Checks made payable to the Director of Finance - State of Hawaii) 

  • Attend scheduled appointments in a timely manner and bring all necessary documents and payments. 

  • If application is approved, pay the two checks/money orders and expect to receive passport around two weeks or so (expect delays, which may increase time to 6-9 weeks). 

How to renew a passport: 

  • Before renewing passport by mail only, make sure client meets the following requirements: 

  • Passport in possession alongside renewal application 

  • Passport is undamaged 

  • Passport was issued when person was age of 16 years or older 

  • Passport was issued within the last 15 years 

  • Passport was issued in person's current name OR show proof of name change 

  • Gather the following documents: 

  • Form DS-82  

  • Passport 

  • Proof of name change (if applicable),  

  • One passport photo  

  • Passport fee – Check or money order ($130) 

  • Optional: Expedited fee ($60) 

  • Complete the renewal application form DS-82 in black ink, print single-sided, then staple four corners of the passport photo in the application. 

  • Gather all documents and fees (fees accepted in checks or money order). 

  • Mail all documents and payments at USPS to the following address:                      

    National Passport Processing Center Post Office Box 90155 Philadelphia, PA 19190-0155 

  • If the application has been approved, you will receive passport around 6-9 weeks OR 3-5 weeks if paid expedited fee.
