This year, the Kalihi Ahupuaʻa Ride was held on a beautiful Saturday in April. A few light showers blessed the riders in the morning, and the clouds kept the normally hot spring day temperature cool. Now in its 6th year, the Kalihi Ahupuaʻa Ride has become a popular annual event with the community. 120 riders and 40 volunteers participated in this year's ride that stretched from the mountain to the ocean.
The ride began at Hoʻoulu ʻĀina with an aloha circle. Riders then rode to KVIBE where they heard from various youth and participated in the construction of a new mural. From KVIBE, they rode to Puea Cemetary to learn about Joseph Kahahawai. A new story stop at Bishop Museum was added to this year's ride where riders gathered at Atherton Hālau to hear moʻolelo told by Marques Hanalei Marzan. Uncle Robert welcomed riders to the next stop on the ride, Niuhelewai at Loʻi Kalo Park. Niuhelewai has become a well-loved place by many of the KVIBE youth. Kalākaua District Park provided a wonderful stop for respite before riders made their final journey toward Mauliola Keʻehi to learn about Mokauea Island. The ride concluded with tired smiles reminiscing about the day spent in community.
Planning a ride of this magnitude is a team effort. Because we can never do this work alone, we would like to thank the many hands that made this day possible.
