Rev. Bob Nakata (1941-2021)

The Rev. Bob Nakata, who served single terms in both the state House and Senate and helped lead the fight for affordable housing on Oahu, passed away last month at the age of 80. His legacy lives on as we continue his fight for our community.

“I learned this morning that our former staff member and longtime ally Reverend Bob Nakata passed away July 12th. Many of you would not know him, but he was a steady force for good in our community and on the Windward side for decades. He will be missed!” Dr. David Derauf

The late former State Senator Bob Nakata that I knew was an easy guy to talk to. He was a friend to everyone and always had a pleasant soft voice. But he provided a strong voice and a caring personality for the people and the community. He loved community meetings and was always present at KKV events, always reaching out to people and listening to community issues. He was a strong human being and advocated for the poor - that was one of his essential qualities. He understood the people’s concerns in a truthful way and not just words.

We will miss his great leadership! Reverend Bob Nakata has touched the lives of many, many families leaving behind a beautiful legacy for our community and the people.” Merlita Compton
