KVIBE’s New Mural: Paving Our Future

Check out the newest addition to KVIBE!  A new mural stands proudly outside of the entrance walls of the KVIBE warehouse. Building upon last year's mural, which celebrated the KVIBE program's history, this year's artwork delves into aspirations for the future. During brainstorm sessions with youth, themes of affordable housing, sustainability, and bike-safe neighborhoods emerged. Inspired by the youth's desire for a perspective of a bicycle wheelie, the mural depicts Kalihi Street winding downhill, offering a view of the ocean and horizon. During this year’s Annual Kalihi Ahupuaʻa Ride, community members were invited to contribute to the creation of a mural, leaving their mark on the handlebars symbolically offering guidance to steer the youth. A portion of the mural is a mosaic, which was brought to life thanks to donated materials, such as plates, tiles, and spare bike parts. Throughout the mosaic process, youth fostered a sense of ownership and pride in "paving their own path." Despite the challenges of inclement weather, the mural stands as a testament to the power of community collaboration and youth empowerment. A big mahalo to artist Yoko Liriano for collaborating with our youth on this project and for sharing her creativity and stewardship.
