KVIBE RETREAT

KVIBE youth stayed close to Pounders Beach, where they were able to jump into the waves and enjoy each other’s friendship and laughter.

On October 28, KVIBE traveled to Lāʻie on Oʻahu for their 3rd annual retreat. Thirteen boys, many of whom had never ventured far from home, spent the weekend at a beach house they named, “The Mansion,” located a short distance from Pounders Beach. Coordinator Austin Haleyalpiy noticed, “The walls came down for the guys when they didn’t have to stay in their ‘KVIBE’ roles all the time. It was amazing to see how the kids took care of each other and had fun away from home.” The weekend gave the KVIBE youth an opportunity to splash around the pool and just hang as a family. One of the boys named “PJ” said, “When I woke up in the morning the view was so beautiful! And I slept close by the pool so I could wake everyone up to go swimming again!”

Two KVIBE members enjoy the peace outside their house, which they named “The Mansion.”

KVIBE Shop Manager, Bruce Konman talked about the idea behind the retreat. “We wanted the kids to see the world beyond Kalihi and go places where people may speak differently or have different views,” he explained. For Bruce, “The atmosphere of trust and the mentors made me want to come to KVIBE years ago. They motivated us to be a better version of ourselves.” Bruce has been coming to the shop since he was in 7th grade to “ride BMX bikes and learn bike mechanics,” he says with a laugh. “The atmosphere of trust and the mentors made me want to come. They motivated us to be a better version of ourselves.” He hopes to provide the same type of positive support for the younger KVIBE members.

While at the Mansion, the boys visited a haunted house since it was close to Halloween. They sang karaoke into the night and woke up to the smell of ocean air. Their visit to Pounders Beach is one they will all remember.

Mahalo to the many KVIBE funders who enabled the team to hold the retreat in 2022.
