“Have you ever been to the zoo?” That's the question that Dr. Matt Oishi playfully poses when asked about a typical day in the dental residency program at KKV. It's not a statement about chaos or disorganization, but rather a testament to the diverse and dynamic elements that come together to shape the experiences of the residents. Every year, KKV offers coveted positions for just four dental residents. Out of the many applicants, those fortunate few are selected to receive training and perform specialized care in areas such as root canals, pediatrics, and gum surgery.

Current KKV Dentist, Dr. Anne Tran, was one of four residents who served during the 2015-2016 cohort. Pictured from left to right are: Dr. Anne Tran, Dr. Laura Van, Dr. David Breese, Dr. Kathleen Cruz, Dr. Tu Tran. Photo courtesy of Anne Tran.

The David R. Breese Center for Community Oral Health is a teaching clinic, where residents receive hands-on mentorship and develop their skills in the company of like-minded peers. And when the year comes to an end, these residents step out into the world as competent dentists, ready to spread their wings.

Hailing from various corners of the country, these residents bring diversity to KKV's educational ecosystem. In partnership with NYU Langone, this program ensures that KKV retains its reputation as a nationally recognized and competitive teaching clinic. Challenges in confidence or knowledge are addressed head-on throughout the year, with an emphasis on equipping residents with the essential skills and experience they need. The journey starts with a watchful supervisor guiding their every move and gradually evolves into increased autonomy, mimicking the progression of a traditional education. The residency program also fosters camaraderie. The structured design encourages bonding among residents, as they support and uplift each other through both the trials and triumphs of their dental education.

Dr. Anne Tran, once a resident herself at KKV, now stands as a testament to the program's transformative power. Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Tran remarks, "Residency was a little different back then than it is today, but I always felt like a part of the family. And that feeling made me want to stay at KKV." It's a sentiment shared by many who've been touched by the unique atmosphere and holistic learning experience at KKV.

As each new batch of residents embarks on their journey, KKV stands as a cheering section, celebrating their resilience and dedication. From facing the unknown to mastering the art of patient-centered care, these residents are not only learning the intricacies of dentistry; they are embracing a philosophy of compassion and skill that transcends textbooks and tools. KKV's dental residency program is a testament to the power of community and the unwavering commitment to the art and science of dentistry.
